How to place the thermoadhesive strips to join punchies

Join your punch needle projects easily without sewing

Just because you love punchear doesn't mean you love sewing. At the Lodge, we use double-sided heat-seal strips, a magical solution for joining punchies without a needle or thread. Their adhesion is equivalent to any sewing technique, allowing you to attach different pieces of punch needle to other surfaces, such as tote bags, cushions, tapestries, or modular rugs.

In this video tutorial, we show you how to properly apply these strips for a clean, durable, and professional finish on any punch needle project.

Instructions for placing the heat-adhesive strips

Materials needed:

✔ Double-sided heat-adhesive strips
✔ Scissors to cut the strips to the required size
✔ Iron without steam
✔ Heat-resistant surface for comfortable working

1. Cut the heat-adhesive strips

Before you begin, cut the heat-seal paper to the dimensions you need. For a 20 cm (8 in) punchy, we recommend cutting strips approximately 5 x 1 cm (2 in) long.

2. Preheat the griddle

Set the iron to a medium temperature without steam. This will prevent damage to the adhesive and ensure a better hold between the punch needle pieces and the chosen surface.

3. Apply the first layer of adhesive

Place the heat-seal strip over the fabric you want to join, with the rough surface in contact with the fabric and the paper backing facing up. Iron over the paper for 2 seconds on each area until the entire surface is joined. Then, let it cool completely.

4. Remove the paper liner and join the second piece

Peel off the backing from the heat-seal strip and place the second piece of fabric or surface where you want to adhere the punchy. Make sure both pieces are aligned before proceeding.

5. Fix with the iron

Press the iron down on the surface for 8 seconds on each strip to fully bond the pieces. Times may vary depending on the fabric: for heavy fabrics: 10 seconds; for cotton: 8 seconds; for lightweight fabrics: 6 seconds.

6. Let it cool for optimal fixation

Once you've completed the entire process, let the project sit for 30 minutes without disturbing it. This will ensure the adhesive sets completely and the bond is strong and durable.

Tips for a better result

✔ Avoid moving the fabric while applying heat, as this may affect the adhesion of the glue.
✔ Use a backing cloth to protect the iron surface and prevent the adhesive from melting onto it.
✔ If the bond isn't firm the first time, reapply heat for a few more seconds, making sure not to exceed the recommended time for each type of fabric.

Iron-on strips are a quick and effective way to join punchies without sewing. With this method, you can attach your punch and needle embroidery to a variety of surfaces, such as tote bags, pillows, and carpet tiles, with a clean and professional finish.
