Types of fillings in punch needle

How to give volume and texture to your embroidery with different types of filling

In punch needle, the filling technique plays a fundamental role in the final result of the embroidery. There are different ways to fill a design to achieve volume, texture and unique visual effects. The two most commonly used types are the spiral fill, ideal for rounded and organic shapes, and the zigzag fill, perfect for geometric shapes and large surfaces.

In this video tutorial, you will learn how to correctly apply these two methods to give your punch needle projects a professional finish.

✔ 4mm thick rustic natural 100% wool.

1. Spiral filling

Spiral filling is a technique often used in punch needle to cover circular or rounded areas in an even manner. Start from the outer edge of the area to be filled, progressively moving towards the centre in circular movements. For best results, maintain a constant rhythm and avoid leaving spaces between stitches to achieve a compact and even filling.

2. Zigzag filling

Zigzag filling is perfect for covering large areas and geometric shapes such as squares or rectangles. It consists of making straight lines alternating the direction of the stitches in a zigzag pattern, moving from left to right until the desired space is filled. This type of filling allows for more dynamic patterns and is often used on backgrounds or large sections where a structured and orderly effect is sought.
