How to finish a punch needle project correctly

The final step for a perfect punch needle: cutting the strands

punch needle is a simple and relaxing technique, and even the process of finishing off your project is easy. In this video tutorial, we show you how to cut the strands correctly so that your design is clean, well-defined and does not risk falling apart over time.

At the Lodge we particularly enjoy this moment, where the sound of the scissors cutting the strands becomes a kind of relaxing music. Follow these steps to finish your punchy in a professional manner.

Steps to finish a punch needle project

Materials needed:

✔ Sharp scissors (preferably stork or embroidery type)
✔ Textile glue only if you do not use rustic natural wool
✔ Reinforcement fabric or backing if the project requires it

Secure stitches before cutting

Before cutting the threads, check that all the stitches are firmly seated. Gently press the embroidery to secure the loops and prevent them from coming loose.

2. Cut the strands precisely

Use sharp scissors to cut the threads on the loop side. Be careful not to pull on the threads or undo the pattern. If there are threads that are longer than others, trim them little by little until you achieve an even finish.

3. Define the edges of the design

If your project has a defined outline, check that the loops on the edges are well aligned. For a more professional finish, you can use the tip of your scissors to distribute the fibers evenly.

4. Apply backing if necessary

If your punchy is going to be used as a cushion, rug or tapestry, you can attach a backing fabric to the back to give it extra strength and a more polished finish. We'll tell you how here.

Tips for a better result

See rustic wool

✔ Use high-precision embroidery scissors for cleaner cuts.
✔ Cut the wool strands, always on the loop side.
✔ Avoid using textile glue to avoid altering the wool. If you use a rustic natural 100% wool, you will not need to use glue.

Finishing a punch needle project is a simple but key process for a flawless finish. By following these steps, you will ensure that your design remains in perfect condition and ready to be displayed or used. Watch the video and enjoy the artistry of punch needle.
