What are the ideal fabrics for punch needle?

The adventure of having tried all the punch needle cloths and leaving us out of pocket
When we began to discover the punch needle, we started to immerse ourselves in the world of punch needle cloths. We bought needles, cloths, wool… always starting with the cheapest options. And we tried punching. It was almost always a disappointment because we didn’t get much.
Here we tell you about our journey through the desert:
Hessian or sacking cloths
Easy to find in a local fabric shop. It comes in various colours and is inexpensive.
Unpleasant smell and feel. It sheds a lot of fibres. Fibres break easily when passing the needle. Loops come loose and cannot be recovered..
Linen cloths
You can buy it in a fabric shop.
Cloth too thin and fragile for punch needle. It has a high cost. Not elastic enough.
Aida cloths
Easy to find in haberdasheries at a relatively cheap price. Mostly cotton fabric in its composition.
Not suitable for thick punch needles as they have a very closed weft. Suitable for fine needles such as micro or ultra punch needle.
Abbess linen cloth
❤️ All terrain cloth for punch needle. The 100% recommended cloth for Oxford Needle. A grayish cloth that allows for unembroidered spaces if desired. It can be machine and hand stitched.
No negative points.
Monk cloths
Available in online shops. Suitable for Oxford needle. 100% cotton.
It frays, deforms, cannot be sewn and is difficult to recover loops.
Popess deluxe cloth
Very high quality fabric recommended for large punch needle frames. Very good pressure resistance A white cloth that allows for unembroidered spaces if desired. It can be machine and hand stitched..
Somewhat expensive.
Questions you might have about punch needle fabrics
Are your punch needle fabrics suitable for any other needle than the Oxford needle?
We can’t guarantee it. When we have a punch needle and we don’t manage to punch correctly, we tend to think that it’s our fault or the fault of the cloth. This is usually not the case. First we have to make sure of the quality of the needle and then of the cloth. There are needles on the market that are very bad in themselves (some popular ones) and they will punch badly no matter what fabric you use.
Do you sell smaller packs of cloths?
These packs are intended for people who have adopted punch needle as a hobby in their lives on an ongoing basis. We have calculated that the packs we have for sale cover more than a year of punch projects. And it’s the way you can benefit from free shipping wherever you are in Europe.
Do I have to tape the pieces before punching?
It is only necessary to tape the Monk cloth, as it is 100% cotton and frays easily. To tape it you can use painter’s tape that you can find in any hardware store. The Abbess and Papisa cloths do not require taping and are thinner and easier to cut.
Can I order a 25-meter piece of fabric?
Yes, you can. Contact us and we will give you an adjusted price and delivery time.

Monk cloth is NOT the best punch needle cloth
You might have read on many sites that Monk cloth is the go-to fabric for punch needle. Well, that’s not the case. We, the Punchers, do not recommend it. And perhaps, you came here intending to buy it. We do have it for sale, but we only recommend it in two cases.
We recommend Monk cloth for:
- Children
- Individuals suffering from arthritis or arthrosis who cannot apply pressure with their hands.
Monk cloth has 3 major drawbacks:
- It frays so you have to tape the entire perimeter of the piece before working with it.
- Monk cloth deforms easily so, when you undo stitches, the fabric does not recover and it is difficult to punch again with the risk of loops coming loose.
- It does not support any sewing option, either by hand or by machine, limiting considerably the formats that can be created.
In summary, while Monk cloth may be the most popular choice, it is not the most practical fabric to work with. Professionals and punch needle enthusiasts often opt for other types of fabrics that offer a blend of fibers, ensuring both consistency and elasticity, allowing for better loop retention and sewability.
