What you should know about Primitive natural punch needle wool
100% natural rustic wool of Spanish Merino sheep
If you want to make rugs, bags, clothes…, or any other punch needle format to enjoy in your daily life, it is important that you use a good wool. This way, your creativity will have a long life and will not deteriorate with use and time. The perfect wool for the Oxford needle is a 100% natural wool from Merino sheep with rustic braided yarns. This wool is the primitive wool of rug hooking, the wool from which the finest handmade rugs were and are made.
It is a thick wool, which we have developed with the help of a craftsman. He makes it especially for us. The Oxford needle nº10 requires a wool with a very specific thickness of 4mm so that you can punch without the wool constantly escaping (as is often the case with most wools) and so that your loops are perfect.

What is so special about 100% natural Merino sheep’s wool?
Merino wool comes from a specific type of sheep with very beneficial properties, with a very fine, soft and high quality fibre. It repels water, has excellent thermal properties, avoids itching and irritations, does not smell, absorbs humidity and repels dirt.
The braided rustic wool will allow you to punch the cloth without loops or wool escaping from your needle, because it is specific for the Oxford needle nº10. Moreover, you will never have to lock the back of your creations because the wool will remain perfectly integrated in the fabric forever.
Primitive wool is the only wool that can guarantee longevity and resistance to your punch needle creations. It is the perfect wool to create rugs, cushions or any format you want or need to last for dozens of years and that is wear-proof. The nice thing is to be able to transmit our punchies from generation to generation.
Primitive wool has a secret of purity: little pieces of straw. When you find them, make a wish.

Natural wool or commercial wool for my punch needle creativities?
You can try all kinds of fibres with the Oxford needle. For example, you can use leftover wool at home. However, some commercial wool will give you worse results than primitive wool. You will see, most of the wools in the market are usually acrylic blends. Although they are sold as natural wool, look at the label and you will see that they contain a percentage (quite high honestly) of “acrylic wool”; that is to say: plastic.
“Acrylic wool” is made from plastic yarns. Plastic yarns are made from a man-made polymer fibre created from fossil fuels (petroleum) through a chemical process. Wool manufacturers often mix a small amount of wool with plastic fibres in order to make it cheaper and to be able to put on its label: “natural wool”, when it is not natural at all. Acrylic fibres in general try to imitate the appearance and properties of natural wool, but they don’t succeed at all. And this is very noticeable in punch needle.
This is what happens when you use “commercial wool” for punching:
- You don’t get your loop to hold on the cloth because, being a plastic fibre, it slips and loops come loose very easily
- Your loops have no relief because the fibre has no body.
- The wool comes off the needle very easily.
- You will have to lock your creativity so that the loops do not come loose over time.
